MARCH AVERY

“I knew I would be a painter. It never occurred to me that I would do anything else.” — March Avery (1994)

Born into a family of artists, March Avery began making her own work daily by age two—sculpting, painting and drawing. As she recalls “My father did not teach me. He was a very non-verbal painter. I would show him one of my paintings and all he would say was ‘paint another.’ The only advice I can remember him giving me was not to go to art school—and I didn’t.” March went on to evolve a style that is distinctly original, emerging from direct observation of the visual world. Both her parents created art with constancy and intensity, and with March at their side. Her work ethic and dedication to art show the same passion and discipline; she works six days a week, five in the studio. March Avery lives in New York City with her husband, scholar and photographer Philip G. Cavanaugh, and close to her son, the painter Sean A. Cavanaugh, his wife, and their daughter.

MICHAEL HAYES

Artist Michael Hayes grew up in Chicago and attended Cooper Union in New York City. She is currently based in Cliffside Park, NJ.
“Art speaks to us of human hopes and fears across time and cultures. In my paintings and collages, I look to a meeting point of rage, lust, divinity, and irony that for me is the crucial mystery of being human. My starting points can be literary fragments, newspaper headlines, or memories. My objective is to transform violence, trauma, sex, and death into abstract images of riveting beauty. I push for an image that has a sense of random inevitability and juxtaposes elements in a way that surprises me and speaks feelingly. The goal is to go with the process to a deep and primitive place. When an image makes me laugh with delight and recognition, I know I'm on the right track.”
